I, Megan – author of Things Mommies Love, am sure you are wondering what the big banner on the right hand side of my site is about. Well, Things Mommies Love feels that it is a great thing that the Blue Star Moms do. They take time out of their busy schedules to help/support those overseas. Things Mommies Love readers should do the same. I ask not only my readers, but readers of other sites to join in on this charity event. Things Mommies Love would like to time out and help show thanks to those soldiers overseas. Things Mommies Love has partnered with Blue Star Moms. The event that Blue Star Moms and Things Mommies Love hosting is called “Project Blue”. Project Blue will be held from October 1st – 31st, and all you have to do is donate either an item off the list (at bottom of article). You can also place a monetary donation (link and information will be available during the event).

Project Blue has a goal to fill 100 Freedom Boxes. A Freedom Box is a box that Blue Star Moms fill with everything from the list below. These Freedom Boxes go to young men and women that are overseas fighting and protecting our precious country.

Oh, and like I mentioned in the opening, these pencils can be used for hair art as well. Pencil Me Cosmetics graciously sent me a few different shades of their eyeliner pencils to review. First, let me say that it is nice to have a sharpener right on the cap of the pencil. Everyone that has spent hours on looking for a sharpener when trying to get ready know what I am talking about. Second, once I applied the eyeliner for the first time, I was amazed at out light my eyes felt. My final conclusion about Pencil Me In Cosmetics: I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a healthy solutions to make-up. I would also recommend to anyone that has a hair salon because young boys may like to put hair art on their heads. Overall, Pencil Me In Cosmetics gets the Things Mommies Love stamp of approval.

Here is a little bit about Paperlicious Girls, "My name is Ashley and I am a mom to a three year old boy and have a little girl on the way due in December, I also teach Pre-K full time. I have always enjoyed having creative outlets such as scrapbooking and homemade art projects, hence my job as a Pre-K teacher. As a teacher, I always loved it when a parent or student would give me personalized gifts, it always made me feel really special. Paperlicious Girls recently sent me a sippy cup with a straw and a plate (pictured above). First, let me say that these items are precious in person. Her photos cannot say enough for the products. Second, both items came nicely wrapped in clear plastic with cute streamers holding the package closed. My daughter wanted to use her cup as soon as I got home.

Things Mommies Love has found a great solutions to any moms nightmare, GERMS ON A RESTAURANT TABLE. The company is called Neat Solutions. Neat Solutions offers table toppers, potty toppers, multi-use pads, floor toppers (meal & play mats), changing pads, and disposable bibs. Their products are Eco-friendly packaged, and the best part they are disposable.

Neat Solutions graciously sent me a package of Dora table toppers to review. First, the table toppers were easy to place onto a table. They have a little tab on both the top and bottom to secure the mat to the table. Second, these are light and easy enough to place in a diaper bag to take to restaurants, or you could even use them on your own table at home. Lastly, clean up a breeze when using the table topper. You simply pull it up off the table and throw it away.

My final conclusion about Neat Solutions table toppers: I would recommend the table toppers to all families that have little ones. These are great for eating out or even your own home. They are Eco-friendly, which is a plus, and clean-up is easy. Overall, Neat Solutions gets the Things Mommies Love stamp of approval.

Breast milk is nature's way of providing the best nutrition to a new born. The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding to babies for the first six months after birth. There are a number of reasons why mothers should breastfeed their babies, some more important than others. Here are 10 important reasons which should encourage non-breastfeeding moms to start breastfeeding their baby right away.

1. Breast milk is easily digestible by the baby
As opposed to formula milk, breast milk is easily digestible by the baby as it is completely natural and does not contain any synthetic or artificial nutrients like those present in formula milk. The protein content in breast milk is also as much as your baby requires, which is easily absorbed by your baby. However, in case of formula milk, more proteins are present, which cannot be absorbed by the baby's immature digestive system. This is why the stools of formula-fed babies are bulkier than those of breast fed babies.

2. Reduced the chances of breast cancer
This is one of the most import reasons why mothers should breast feed their babies. Moms who breastfeed their new born are at a reduced risk of suffering from breast cancer at a later stage in life. Moreover, it has been researched that baby girls who are breastfed also have a reduced risk of suffering from breast cancer at a later stage in life.

3. Breast milk increases levels of IQ in children
Children who are breast fed develop higher IQ levels than bottle fed milk. This is directly related to the growth hormones which are present in breast milk and are essential for the cognitive growth of the child. Whether the baby received breast milk directly through the breast or pumped, like using Avent Breast Pump or Medela Pump, studies show that it is the consumption of human milk that causes higher levels of IQ in school going children.

4. Breast milk helps pass meconium
Meconium is the sticky, black tar-like substance that passes from the babies intestines after birth. A mothers breast naturally produce colostrum in the initial days after birth which contains natural laxatives, along with antibodies and hormones to help clean the baby's intestines. Formula fed babies often have problems getting rid of meconium after birth.

5. Breast milk helps build the baby's immune system
Since breast milk is naturally produced, it contains all the essential nutrients, minerals, growth hormones, antibodies and other vitamins required by the baby. These substances help the baby to build a stronger immune system, helping the baby to fight against infections, diseases and illnesses. No formula milk can provide these disease fighting antibodies. According to a research, about 80% cells found in breast milk are macrophages, which are cells that help kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. This is why beast fed babies visit the hospital less often.

6. Increases the emotional bonding between the mother and the child
Breastfeeding is a natural process and it helps the mother and the child to bond with each other by spending quality time together. This emotional bonding is essential for the baby to grow in to a good human being. Bottle fed babies who are not able to make this bond can develop feelings of �neglect� over time. Touching and holding gives a very comforting and soothing feeling to the baby.

7. Breast feeding releases hormones in the mothers body
Breast feeding is known to release the hormone oxytocin in the mothers breasts, which helps in stimulating the uterine contractions, helping the mother to recover quickly after birth. Oxytocin helps the uterus to return back to its normal size. It also helps mothers to regain their figure more quickly. Non-breastfeeding moms are never able to shrink the uterus back to its pre-pregnancy size.

8. Reduces the risk of diabetes in children
Infants that are breastfed are at a reduced risk of developing diabetes in the later stages in life. Studies show that lack of breastfeeding is directly associated with the development of Type I diabetes over time. Non breast feeding babies are usually introduced to dairy products at an early stage. This increases the level of cow's milk antibodies in the child's system, increasing the risk of insulin dependent diabetes. Infants that are breastfed are also known to be at a reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

9. Prevents post-partum hemorrhage in mothers
The release of oxytocin in the mothers body due to breastfeeding helps to shrink the uterus back to its pre-pregnancy size and also helps to expel the placenta. The contractions that allow this to happen also shut off the maternal blood vessels that fed the baby during pregnancy, discouraging excessive bleeding after child birth. Mothers who do not breast feed often have to take artificial oxytocin to help prevent post-partum hemorrhage.

10. Protects the baby against illnesses, infections and diseases
This reason makes breast milk the best gift for babies provided to every mother by nature. The natural antibodies present in breast milk allow the baby to fight against infections such as ear infections, infections of the respiratory system and intestinal tract, as well as reduces the risk of asthma in infants. Not only this, but breast milk also reduces diarrheal infections, vision defects, bacterial meningitis and the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, known as SIDS.

These factors are just a tiny part of more than 100 other reasons why breast milk is best for you and your child. So if you are a mother who has just given birth, or will be soon, should make every effort to give the best to yourself and to your child.

Things Mommies Love has found another store favorite on Etsy.com This time it is a company called Rozzi's Sweet Peas. Rozzi's Sweet Peas is "designing fresh and new creations for your little Sweet Peas with dupione silks, bridal satins, organzas, Moda, Anne Griffin, Amy Butler, Twila, and other Designer Fabrics." The thing that caught my eye about Rozzi's Sweet Peas is the items are absolutely beautiful.

Rozzi's Sweet Peas recently had one of their outfits worn in a Beauty Pageant. The outfit won Best Casual Wear. This is was Rozzi's Sweet Peas posted on their blog about the event, "Yes! You did read this right...our own Sweet Pea is the WINNER! This outfit designed and sewn in our shop won Best of the whole Beauty Pageant Show for Casual Wear! The Mom, who is really terrific, asked if I could redo the colors in pinks, greens and blacks from my red, white and black ladybug peasant apron pants set. She was pleased with the results. I was pleased with the results. The Judges were pleased with our results.

I have to admit, never having a daughter of my own this means the world to me. I love the idea that a mom loves her daughter and wants to show them off in cute clothes. I love mommy's taking pride in their children. As an RN it was often my sorrow to see what happens when mommy's hurt their little girls. So for me this love that mommy's lavish on their children is a breath of HEAVEN. Can anything be sweeter than a darling little one dressed so cute that everyone goes ..awwww! I don't think so...so here's to our Handmade Heavenly Angel...Laikyn's mom! CONGRATULATIONS Dana and Laikyn and HIP HIP HOORAY!!! hugs rozzi"

Rozzi's Sweet Peas graciously sent me a Pink Apron and Ballerina Dress (pictured through) to review. First, let me say that this dress is must more precious in person. The dress came nicely wrapped in tissue paper inside a gift box. Second, the work that was put into the dress was exquisite. I took the dress to Reflections Photography to be photographed. The pictures turned out beautifully. The little girl kept pulling at the petal apron that came with the dress. So, all pictures are without the apron.

My final conclusion about Rozzi's Sweet Peas: I would recommend if you are looking for unique, but beautiful pieces to shop Rozzi's Sweet Peas. I would also recommend that the Apron and Ballerina dress to anyone with little girls or even photographers. Just be aware that little girls 6mnths- 1yr may want to pull at the petals on the apron. Overall, Rozzi's Sweet Peas gets the Things Mommies Love stamp of approval.

Personal Oasis - Review & Giveaway

Things Mommies Love has found another store favorite on Etsy.com This time it is a company called Personal Oasis. Personal Oasis specializes in handmade jewelry and quilts. Using natural gemstones, metal and crystal accents, my jewelry has a fantastically natural feel to it.

Personal Oasis graciously sent me the Yellow Quartz and Peridot Necklace, Bracelet and Earrings set to review (pictured to the left). First, the jewelry came nicely wrapped. Second, all three pieces (necklace, earrings, and bracelet) were very simple and light weight. This made it nice because I personally prefer smaller pieces of jewelry. Finally, The colors were bright. Personal Oasis used yellows , greens, and silver (yellow and green stones pieces, and all jewelry parts were silver) for the color combinations, which was beautiful together.

Things Mommies Love would recommend Personal Oasis to all our friends that need jewelry for any occasion. They always have some bigger pieces that may suit your needs versus the smaller Light weight set I received.

___ TIP: Foods that Will Drastically Cut Your Grocery Bill

Most of us are looking for ways to reduce costs. Whether you’ve started clipping coupons or you’ve cut back on eating out, food budgets are a good place to go when looking for breathing room in your budget. There are other ways to save at the grocery store, including stocking up on certain foods. Here are five foods that when implemented into your diet will drastically cut your grocery bill.

Wheat Kernels - For many people, meat is the most expensive thing they buy at the grocery store. Whether it’s beef, chicken, or fish, your main course is usually the priciest part of your meal. Next time you make a dish with ground beef, try adding a filler like whole wheat kernels, also known as wheat berries. When boiled, they have a nutty taste and a great texture that can be added to meat. Simply cut the meat in your recipe in half and add the same amount of boiled wheat kernels. You’ll have a great tasting meal for almost half the cost.

Beans - There are few foods cheaper than beans. Buy them uncooked and in bulk to save the most. If you end up buying them canned or already prepared, you’ll miss out on much of the savings. Beans can also be a nutritious addition to your meals because they are high in protein.

Rice - Rice is another very cheap item that will save you a lot of money at the grocery store. Look for bags of white or brown rice in bulk. Don’t buy flavored rice if you want to save as much money as possible. Simply add your own seasonings or ingredients to change up the flavor.

Produce - Fruits and veggies are an important part of our diet. And they can also be a great way to stretch your food budget. The key to finding cheap fruits and veggies is buying in season. Right now you’ll find great deals on grapes, tomatoes, peaches and melons. Bananas are typically less than a dollar a pound. You can also save money by shopping for fresh produce at your local farmer’s market.

Eggs - Eggs are a great source of protein and only about $.10 each. If you’re looking for a way to boost your protein intake without spending a lot of money on meat, eggs are a good alternative. Since eggs don’t last forever, buy only what you need to avoid waste.

You can purchase something personalized for your little ones, and pick-up something for yourself as well. Tweet Tweet Boutique offers a wide line of product. They offer personalized onesies, burp cloths, key chains, personalized t-shirts, tote bags, fabric headbands, teacher gifts, grad gifts, and more!

We would like to share some information on this wonderful organization.

Blue Star Moms (from brochure): “On January 22, 1942 the Flint News Advertiser printed a coupon asking Mothers of servicemen to return the coupon after filling it out. The following February 1st 300 mothers met in the Duran Hotel, in Flint Michigan. Captain George H. Maines, who had conceived the idea for this group, acted as the chair of this first meeting. It was decided after receiving 1000 responses from the ad to form a permanent organization.

On February 6th the organization was reported on the Congressional record. Chapters then formed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, Iowa, and Washington. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress.

Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for the soldiers and were a working part of homeland security during times of war. The organization waned in size over the years but has held together by mothers showing pride in both their children and country. In recent times we have began to grow in strength.

Being attacked on our own soil has once again started mothers hanging flags in their windows at home proclaiming pride in the fact that we have children protecting our freedom during war time.

Our organization provides support for active duty personnel, promotes patriotism, assists Veterans organizations, and is available to assist in homeland volunteer efforts to help our country remain strong.”

Things Mommies Love has done it again. I have another Etsy store you must visit. This time it is a company called 3 Creative Sisters. They offer cards, bookmarks, baby/barbie blankets, gift tags, gift pails, gift boxes, gift sets, magnet/bits and baubles, paintings , and vintage items.

3 Creative Sisters recently sent me 2 gift tags, 3 bookmarks, birthday card with thank you note set, and 3 owl note cards to review. First, 3 Creative Sisters products were nicely protective in clear packaging. Second, the bookmarks were laminated. Which is great because who wants to continue to change paper bookmarks (that tear easily) every couple of pages. Third, the cards/note cards were really cute. They were made of high quality materials, and had bright bold colors.

Breaking needles while breaking ground - A few thoughts on learning a new skill

Let me introduce myself by showing you how incompetent I am.

Below is a small portion of the embarrassingly large collection of bent, broken and really messed up needles and pins I saved from my first year of learning to sew.

A natural with the sewing machine I am not. Almost every day for a year I would be stitching along, gently muttering to myself as is my way, and be suddenly interrupted by an unnatural crunch or bang or shiny pointy thing flying by at eye embedding velocity. Despite my painfully obvious lack of natural ability at sewing, I persevered. Which I think is why I saved all the little bits of broken needles that were not lost to the carpet or my husband’s feet. I knew that I was so bad at it that I couldn't help but get better. And I wanted to one day show myself how useless I was when I began.

Three years later, I still break a frightful number of needles. But I am hooked enough on sewing that I’ve begun making a small income from making patterns. For myself, this learning to sew and actually making a small but respectable living from it is a change in character on par with demon possession. Four years ago I would of declared I’d rather have my tongue eaten by red ants than to actually thread a needle. Four years ago I was an academic with a new baby, who considered handicrafts as a topic only suitable for research and dissection, a pastime of the pioneers and Victorian women with parlors. Not really something having to do with me or the real world. But, despite myself, here I am.

What happened? Simple. I was bitten by the same bug that now plagues so many of us: She who elevates the domestic into Art. The new baby was my entry into a world of pacifiers, onesies, and the kitchen (eventually the little mite had to eat something besides me.) Trying to learn a little about what I was doing turned out to be a gateway to all sorts of glossy magazines and cleverly illustrated books about what is loosely called domestic skills. I got hooked on Martha.

So many of us who are now in the parenting trenches with young children have come to our domestic situations with alternating distain for housework (and a reflexive gag to the word ‘housewife’), and a semi-erotic fascination with the art of homemaking. It is the domestic divas, all the way from the corporate illusions with their glossy magazines to the earthy honesty of crafty bloggers, that we love. It’s their decorous lives and staged calm that we envy and emulate. We want to be them and live in their unbounded and unfractured homes, where friends, children, baking bread and having to do the dishes all come together in a seamless package, achievable by anyone with a glue gun and some rudimentary sewing skills.

Seduced by the possibility of glitter glue, the courage hinted at by the term DIY, along with some honest urges to create and build, a whole lot of women are teaching themselves some time honored skills. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, scrap booking (documenting), cooking, quilting, needlework, jewelry making and more. We do it for our children and for ourselves.

The learning of the domestic arts is not straight forward. It is a realm loaded with political meaning, culturally, on the newsstands, from our families. There is often strong feelings, both positive and negative associated with learning to sew or knit. Many of us actually have a bit of previous experience in what we are trying to learn. The first encounter is usually with one of those sweet old granny types who get us going as preschoolers with some yarn and a crochet hook to knot into endless chains of rainbow garland.

If only we could of stayed at grandma’s knee! But, off to school to learn the three Rs and not until junior high does someone official decide that a brief introduction, a half term for each topic in the domestic, will round out our academic careers. I know some of you loved Home Ec., but for many of us it was a test to discover our pain thresholds. Sewing, knitting, these things are best taught – if someone is to teach you – one on one by someone loving (or at least kind), where we feel safe and warm and there are cookies in close proximity. Because there is going to be a lot of hard work and no guarantees that the end product will be attractive or wearable. In a classroom, or, in my junior high, a fluorescent lit chamber of horrors, the handcrafts become a form of torture, meant to highlight our adolescent awkwardness and hold our eternal hopelessness with an ancient Singer up for our classmate’s amusement. Remember, this is the same class that would publicly weigh 12 year old girls and give provide helpful advice on weight management. Obviously there is a malevolent force at work.

By the time we are adults we are convinced that needlework/knitting/rug hooking is ‘just not our thing’. Our sewing goes as deep as stapling a fallen hem back up before work and our cooking skills amount to a folder full of restaurant delivery menus. Yet, now, here we are, full grown, with kids, and looking at the magazines, the blogs, the quilt shows, and feeling primal inspiration. And inspiration is not a feeling that is easily dismissed.

The question is, then, how to start again, now that we are adults? How does one learn to sew/knit/bake bread?

I think of this question often. How do we learn? Especially now that we are in our 20s, 30s, 40s and are so busy with children, home, and work that a few moments to ourselves at the end of the day is an invitation to a margarita and some darkly ironic television. How to plunge ourselves into learning something so intimidating? More than that, if you are going to learn, how do you not waste time?! We’ve only got a few minutes a day! No time to meander through endless instructions and silly projects designed to teach you the basics but are basically useless. We want something we can sew during a naptime and not feel that we would have better spent our time vacuuming when junior wakes up.

I’m feeling pretty good about the small distance I’ve covered since I began to sew three years ago. But I have a long list of things I’d like to get some practical knowledge of, including my old nemesis knitting, which always makes me say words that I’d rather my children not repeat. To help myself out, I keep in mind some of the lessons I learnt along with the stitching. I’d like to share them with you, on the small chance that you will pass along some of your gleaned wisdom to me.

- Start with what interests you. Do not think, “I’ll make a Kleenex holder because the book says it’s a good beginner project and making a shirt like I really want to is for people who know what they are doing, which isn’t me.” Kleenex holders are boring. Make the shirt. You may not have a good shirt at the end, but you will know a whole lot more than any silly Kleenex holder would of taught you. Keep your motivation by pursing what is interesting to you right now.

- Learning is holistic. There is much range to what can be learnt, and going from A to B to C is the slow way. We are smart (and busy). Aim to start with M, N, and O, and most likely the ABC will be learnt along the way.

- Find a spot in the bottom of the closet (underneath where the cat sleeps preferably) for unfinished or just plain bad projects. Truth: not everything you will make will be beautiful and perfect. Make room for the ugly and messy. Mistakes and failures are inevitable. And useful, because we really do learn more from our mistakes. Grow comfortable with these inevitable blunders, look and learn from them, and then move on.

- Because moving on – the processes or flow - is what it is all about, not the end product. If you are not enjoying the overall activity (keeping in mind that not every moment will be rapturous), then rethink your attachment to it. Why are you doing this? Learning is not about gritting your teeth and struggling through. Learning is exciting and fun and, sometimes, about discovering your own determination and character. Learning is about following your heart, and if your heart says, ‘this sucks!’, then you’d better listen.

- Find a loving community. The internet is a fantastic resource for all sorts of interests. There also are community groups, friends, and perhaps even grandmas. Somewhere are some good people who are also learning or know what you want to know. Go find them.

Most of all, I have found that I should not get too invested in the labels – academic, mother, crafty person, pattern maker. Labels are limiting and really do no justice to what those titles actually mean. And labeling misses content. I know people who knit pink infant pinafores and others who knit skulls on bikinis. Night and day. Yet the skill set is the same and both come from the well-spring of creativity that we all share. Let your intuition and desires be your guide and you will find yourself learning exactly what you need to know.

I believe I have done it again. I found another must have item for your clothing collection. This time it is a company called Hip-T. Hip-T offers a unique item. They offer women a way to wear those favorite jeans without showing their hinnies to the world. Hip-T offers three different styles in several colors.

Hip-T graciously sent me a heather gray basic hip-t review. First, Hip-T has a really cute package. It really doesn’t look like a normal clothing package. Second, the hip-t basic was made of excellent quality, and was very light weight. When I received it the weather was in the 100’s here, and I still wore it under shirts. It was nice to not show my hind end when sitting down, and it was nice to be able to do that when the heat is unbearable. The hip-t holds shape very well. When I washed and dried it, it still came out looking like new. I would recommend very tween, teen, and woman to purchase a hip-t.

A little bit about the story behind Hip-T: (comes from website) “After years of loving and living in our low rise jeans and layering t-shirt over t-shirt, we had to acknowledge there was a problem. Daily activities such as sitting at a restaurant or bending to tie a shoe were met with constant rear end exposure of one type or another. To make matters worse, we were tired of dealing with bulky messy layers of t-shirts in hopes of camouflaging what might make an appearance with the next bend and snap! Let's not forget, layering in itself is a great look. There are lots of ways to protect your child's skin all year long.

Stay inside.

UV rays are strongest and most harmful during midday, so it's best to plan indoor activities then. If this is not possible, seek shade under a tree, an umbrella or a pop-up tent. Use these options to prevent sunburn, not to seek relief once it's happened.

Cover ‘em Up.

Clothing that covers your child's skin helps protect against UV rays. Although a long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave are best, they aren't always practical. A T-shirt, long shorts or a beach cover-up are good choices, too—but it's wise to double up on protection by applying sunscreen or keeping your child in the shade when possible.

Wear a Hat.

Hats that shade the face, scalp, ears, and neck are easy to use and give great protection. Baseball caps are popular among kids but they don't protect their ears and neck. If your child chooses a cap, be sure to protect exposed areas with sunscreen.

Wear sunglasses.

And they protect your child's eyes from UV rays, which can lead to cataracts later in life. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.

Swerve - Something for the Guy's

Let me start off by saying that I very rarely shave using a razor. I like many other men suffer from two medical conditions (One being laziness and the other being easily razor burned). I recently had the opportunity to try out the swerve. Basically the swerve is a handheld razor minus the traditional handle. It fits comfortably in the user’s hand allowing surprising control over the blade. I was pleasantly surprised with the results but will probably continue to use my trimmers. The product itself was actually a fairly simple design that was accented by the control I had as I was shaving. I have a number of scars on the top of my head and didn’t feel that I was really ever in jeopardy of cutting myself. The blade rinsed easily enough so clean-up was a snap. My only complaint would be the quality of the blade that was provided. I don’t necessarily think that this is entirely product related but it dulled quickly and left my head feeling a little burned. I think that this is a minor issue for anyone that regularly shaves and that they would be more than satisfied. I am not really into “star” rating systems but if I had to I would give the swerve 4 out of 5 stars. As a side note I will never let my wife attempt to shave my head ever again as this was the only time I was cut during the entire process.

Things Mommies Love has found another store favorite on Etsy.com This time it is a company called Crafty Mama Designs. Crafty Mama Designs offers "Boutique quality hair clips- at affordable prices!" The things that caught my eye about Crafty Mama Designs is the variety of color and pattern choices. Crafty Mama Designs offers a wide line of product. They offer hair accessories for babies and girls, hair bow holders, jewelry, wine charms, beaded serve ware, and frames.

Crafty Mama Designs graciously sent me a set of 3 mini-bow clippies to review. First, the clippies came beautiful displayed on a 4x6 card. The card was not overwhelming with design or information about the store. It made the clippies the focal point of the piece. Second, the clippies were made of high quality materials (clip & ribbon). The colors were bright. Crafty Mama Designs used white, turquoise, and green (white with turquoise and green dotted circles pattern- turquoise with blue-green-pink flowers- white with turquoise and green flowers) for the color combinations, which was beautiful together. And Finally, my daughter (who tested these out for me) loved wearing the cute mini-bow clippies from Crafty Mama Designs. (The item I received is pictured to the left.)

I will be adding this new addition to Things Mommies Love because one night while looking over products to review my husband said, "hey, what about the guys'?" Every parent is always looking for new ways to keep their child(ren) safe. Recently, I came across Safety Tat while looking for emergency and safety items moms would interested in using. Safety Tat has a great solution that will calm very parents nerves. Safety Tat offers ID tattoo stickers for children. They come in write-0ns and pre-made. Now, I have seen several companies that offer tags & labels for items like cups, bags, toys, clothes, etc., but Safety Tat is the first company that I personally have come across that offers a "label" for your child.

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Quick Stick Write-On! from Safety Tat. I tried this product out on my daughter who has hypoallergenic skin. She thought is was the coolest thing that I was writing on her. The Quick Stick Write-On! came with a little pen, and applying it to my daughter required NO WATER! The Safety Tat Quick Stick took a whole 1 minute to apply (clean spot, peel, stick, hold, peel, write). She has been wearing the same Safety Tat Quick Stick Write-On! for a couple of days now. She has continued with her daily activities like normal (baths, water playing, etc.). My finally opinion is that these are great products, and are great for times in emergencies. I will be suggesting to my son's school to purchase some on these Safety Tat Quick Stick Write-On!

Let's look at the products. Bubble Planner offers Paper Planners, Notepads, Software, PDF forms, Books, and Refill supplies. The Paper Planners with the bubble maps is great for both right & left sided brain people. it is always great for people to work both sides of the brain. I especially like the Grocery List Pad. Forget the five-star restaurant. Heck, even dinner and a movie can cost as much as a week's worth of groceries. But Friday night fun doesn't have to mean breaking the bank. Here are some entertainment alternatives that won't cost you a single penny.

Rent a Free Movie. According to the National Association of Theater Owners, taking in the latest blockbuster costs an average of $6.88 per ticket in 2007. That means even before buying some buttery popcorn and an ice cold Coke, a movie will set a family of four back nearly $30. But have you thought about checking out your local library? They've got hundreds, maybe even thousands, of movies you can watch for free, including new releases. If you haven't visited your local library since your school days, it may be worth another trip.

Plan a Game Night. One way to break boredom is to break out the board games. Chances are you've got a few stashed in the closet. Gather a group of friends and play the night away. Ask others to bring a few from their game collections so everyone can try something new.

When breaking the bank for your wedding isn't an option

Big pink letters, scrawled across the top of the page, "Recessionista wedding on a $10,000 budget!" I tossed that magazine on top of the big pile of second hand wedding magazines spread across my floor. With my hands on my forehead, I wondered how in the world I was going to pay for this wedding. Maybe $10,000 is considered a "budget" wedding to some, but personally, I don't have $10,000 to spend on a one day party. I have student loans and a mortgage to pay off, so I set our wedding budget at $2,000.

I know, traditionally, in the US, the girl's parents are supposed to pay for the wedding. My parents won't pay for my wedding and even if they wanted to, they for sure don't have the means to pay for some lavish affair. I was left with two choices, well, three actually - we could just not get married, or we could get married at the courthouse, or I could take a big look at what was necessary and create it, then cut everything else. I chose options number three.

Later that night, hunched over my laptop in bed, I scrolled through tons of wedding Web sites. It was more of the same stuff that was found in the shiny magazines all over the living room floor - strapless, A-line dresses, bridesmaids in expensive dresses they were never going to wear again, $800 cakes, Swarovski encrusted everything and fancy china patterns. I didn't want all of that for my wedding - and I couldn't afford all of it with my budget - I had to cut something out.

"Maybe I could just try to make a cake? I don't have to have glitter, I guess. Maybe I could make my own bouquet from flowers from Trader Joe's!" Rolling around in bed, I couldn't stop thinking about what to cut. Grabbing my lap top from the side table, I flipped it on and began to type. "Wedding Traditions History." Enter. "Hmmm, ok, so basically every wedding tradition (http://thelittlebudget.blogspot.com/2009/07/when-for-sake-of-tradition-heaps-on.html) is based upon confusing evil spirits and trying to become super, extra fertile."

The light bulb clicked. I didn't need all this to have a memorable wedding. Those traditions weren't relevant for me. I could cut out all of it. All I needed was my fiance and a minister to show up to have a great wedding. Everything else was just icing on the cake. I decided I didn't need to impress anybody with overly expensive flower arrangements, champagne bars or $90 a person plated dinners. Everybody who is invited knows I can't throw a platinum wedding so there was no need for me to pretend like I could. When I decided what was important for me, it became easy to start cutting out tons of unnecessary stuff - after all, I was paying for this wedding so I didn't care what anybody else thought.

Walking through the mall with my fiance, I spotted the most gorgeous dress for sale in a boutique - a 2007 wedding gown - for $1,299! It was way out of the budget of $2,000 I had set for myself. I talked with the owner of the shop and she said she could get it down to $800. I decided to wait. After all, it was a 2007 gown, but my wedding wouldn't be until June 2010. Hopefully by this winter the dress will be drastically discounted. Either way, it gives me time to get my booty down to the size 6 the dream dress is (it's a floor model) so I can buy it outright in cash on the spot.

It was a flamenco looking dress so I decided, "Hey, this would be a great theme for the wedding!" I began scouring the Internet for pictures of Spain and flamenco festivals to get ideas. I didn't want to do the whole "two colors are my theme" thing. This allowed me to get on the lookout for Spanish, Mediterranean and flamenco themed items in whatever color was in stock at the store or what I already had on hand at home. I didn't have to spend extra money on special ordering things in a rare shade of peach. I could carry a flamenco fan down the aisle, wear shoes I already owned and take whatever was being offered on Craigslist to use for my tables. There are always people getting rid of stuff and sometimes you can hit the jackpot for wedding goodies if you keep your eyes peeled on sites such as Craigslist or Freecycle.

When I was in school, I used to work at a bakery. We did catering orders all the time. I realized that for my own wedding, I could easily make the food served at my reception because we're serving a buffet of tapas instead of a sit down dinner. As well, we're not having a fondant covered wedding cake. After working at a bakery, I never want to eat a cake again and cheesecake was too costly for 70 people. Instead, we're serving up a huge platter of Mexican wedding cookies / Russian tea cakes. My fiance’s sister and one of my good friends offered to help me make all of the food. I've decided instead of a wild and crazy bachelorette party (I rarely even drink) we're going to spend Saturday prepping and assembling the food because we all love to cook.

I needed to look for a location for our wedding - after all, I didn't matter how cheap I bought wedding stuff for if I didn't have a location to set it all up. One thing I insisted on when looking for a location for our reception was the ability to bring in our own food and drinks - simply because it's so much cheaper when you can compare prices. I looked around online and couldn't find a spot. My fiance’s parents live in an upscale gated community with a golf course and country club. They happen to be members of the country club which is very popular for weddings and they get a deep discount on renting out the facility, but, it was way out of our budget. The rental fees range $800–5,000 - out of the question for us. In addition, if we booked there, we weren't allowed to bring in any outside food or drinks; everything had to be bought from the onsite caterers. Their meals range $40–60 per person and tax, alcohol and an 18% service charge are additional. Although beautiful, we just didn't have the budget for such extravagance. Instead, my fiance’s parents said we could use their backyard terrace for both the wedding and reception! We were getting the same lovely scenery at no cost.

I'm still in the planning stages of our wedding and because my fiance and I cut out the traditions that didn't make sense to us, kept our eyes open for deals and didn't get caught up in the minute details, we've well on our way to making our budget. This, along with a little planning, some bottles of paint, a stack of paper, a bunch of glue and a ton of patience, allows us to save a bundle by DIYing most of our wedding "stuff." A big coordinated garage sale in my neighborhood recently gave me a surprising wakeup call. It’s one thing to see a family’s stuff spread out in the front yard, but quite another to see a whole neighborhood’s castoffs at one time. All I could think of as I walked from one yard to the next was all the dumb decisions that led to this colossal display of stuff— purchased with dollars, now offered for pennies.

Imagine how much cash you’d have right now if you could get a do-over on all the thoughtless purchases you’ve made in your lifetime. Me? I’d be one wealthy woman!

I can’t tell you what those little money wasters are in your life (the five pairs of black shoes in your closet? dozens of owl figurines for your collection?). All you have to do is take a walk through your house to see what you’ve been throwing away your money on. Me, I’ve learned that there are a lot of “conveniences” I don’t really need. Once you put an end to them, it’s like giving yourself a raise. Just think about it. If you can cut out the stupid stuff, you may have the money you need to start a serious savings program or to pay down your debts. Read and learn from my mistakes.

1. Extended Warranties
Generally, they’re not worth the money. (The only thing I now have a warranty on is my laptop computer, and that’s because I practically beat it to death.) If a new gadget or appliance is going to fail, research tells us it will do so during the manufacturer’s warranty period or long after the extended warranty has expired. That makes extended warranties, which can cost anywhere from $5 to hundreds of dollars, a big profit center for retailers and a pretty useless expense for consumers.

Get Smart: If you’re worried about a breakdown, take the money you’d spend on a warranty and stash it into a special savings account. If your item fails, you’ll have the money to repair it. If not (which is more likely), in three or five years when everything’s gone well, you’ll have stashed away a nice little nest egg.

2. Gym Fees
The sales pitch is compelling and the promise of better health is hard to deny. But getting roped into a legal obligation to pay a big monthly fee for the next two or three years—whether you use the gym or not—makes no sense.

Get Smart: Find a gym or health club that requires no contract (you pay by the month if and when you desire). Or don’t pay at all: There’s a big wonderful world out there where you can walk, jog or run for free!

3. Fast-Food Runs
You know how ridiculous it is to spend $3 or $4 for coffee—over and over, day after day. But how about the other snacks and food purchases that can cause your bank account to evaporate? A morning egg sandwich here, an afternoon bag of chips there…before you know it, you’ve spent $20 or more a week.

Get Smart: Before you leave the house in the morning, figure out how much cash you’ll need for the day, then take only that amount with you. Bring your own snacks and pack a brown-bag lunch to reduce costs even more.

4. Cell Phone Apps and Ringtones
OK, so it’s cool to have ringtones, apps and games on your cell. And sure, $2 to $3 a pop or $10 a month may not seem like a lot of money for so much fun. But watch out. You can blow through a lot of cash in no time.

Get smart: Make a hard-and-fast rule that you do not pay for ringtones, apps or games—then find them for free. They’re out there; you just have to search for the ones that work on your particular phone and with your service provider. Check out Phonezoo.com or Myxer.com. You can even make your own ringtones for free, using MP3s you already own.

5. Fees (Late, Over Limit or Worse):
Not paying attention to your bills is a big mistake these days, when banks are doing all they can to boost their profits. Getting credit card payment in late can mean a $39 whack on the wrist. Being sloppy with your bank account and bouncing a check can cost you around $27.

Get smart: Find your inner private detective. Go over every statement and question every entry. Don’t know what it is? Find out! Get bold! If you’re charged a fee for something silly like allowing your balance to drop a few bucks below the agreed-upon minimum or sending your payment a day late, call customer service. Explain that this is so not like you, as evidenced by your clean record. Then ask them to waive the fee or reverse the charge if it has already been assessed to your account.

6. Landline Extras
Have you looked at your home phone bill lately? I mean really carefully? You could be paying for features you never use: call forwarding, call waiting, who knows what else. Those add-ons could be costing you $15 a month or more.

Get smart: Can’t find a recent bill? Pick up the phone and call customer service. If you use your mobile phones more often than your home landline, consider canceling the bells and whistles to get your home service down to the bare minimum.

7. Rental Car Insurance
Saying yes can add anywhere from $9 to $30 or more per day to the cost of the car. That’s a waste if you carry insurance on your cars at home, or if you pay with a credit card that offers rental car insurance as a perk. Your existing auto policy may be all you need if it includes third-party liability, collision and comprehensive coverage for rentals (most do!).

Get smart: Before you even get to the car rental counter, call your insurance agent to make sure you’re covered. Check your credit card’s terms and conditions, too.

8. Computer Software
You got a great deal on that new computer, so why go broke loading it up with software? Before you spend a dime, take a look at all the freeware out there. You’ll find programs written by enthusiasts and distributed with no strings attached: games, graphics, office suites, fonts, every kind of desktop tool and gadget imaginable.

Get smart: Check out FreewareHome.com, an index site that lists more than 5,500 programs that really are free. No request for money in the documentation, no nag screens asking for payment or donations, no time limits!

9. Unlimited Texting
Most cell phone plans include a certain number of texts with the basic service. Texting is fun, but it can get out of control in a big hurry. Upgrading to an unlimited plan can add $15 (about $180 per year per phone on your cell plan) just so you can engage in a lot of meaningless chatter. How dumb is that?

Get Smart: Forget the upgrades. Scale back to a limited number of text messages for you and the kids, too. A little selfdiscipline could be a good thing for everyone involved.

10. Bottled Water
You’ve got to hand it to the bottled water industry. They’ve managed to convince otherwise rational people to pay around 800 times more to purchase water in a bottle rather than get it from the tap. These days a 16-oz bottle of “spring” water goes for about a dollar, which works out to about $8 a gallon—twice the cost of milk, and roughly on par with soft drinks. Home delivery is less per gallon, but still around $40 a month, according to online averages. However, 16 8-oz glasses of tap water cost about a penny. Bottom line: You’ve heard it before, but now you have to do it. Lay off the bottled water!

Get Smart: The next time you feel thirsty, turn on the tap. Don’t like the taste of your tap water? Invest in a filter pitcher or install an inexpensive faucet filter. You’ll still come out ahead.

11. Music Downloads
Unless you’ve got money to burn, paying 99¢ or more per tune can add up. But not to worry. There are plenty of ways to get free music downloads, all totally legal and easy to access.

Get Smart: Check out the free classical catalog at ClassicCat.net. Or take advantage of the free downloads section at Rhapsody.com. Want country? At CountryWeekly.com, click on “Free Music Downloads” under “Music.” At Amazon.com, click on “Digital Downloads” from the lefthand menu, then “MP3 Downloads.” On the left under “Browse MP3s,” there’s a Most Popular category.
